In the centre of one of the county's most picturesque villages, The George & Dragon has been in the same family for 37 years, and Malcolm Curtin has been at the helm since 1982, ably assisted by his partner Rose.

The historic inn was built in 1722, and the promise of the characterful redbrick exterior is more than fulfilled in the beamed bars, where a marvelous collection of gleaming brass and copper and old pictures and prints fill most of the wall space.

An inscription in the front porch, accredited to Rowland Egerton Warburton of nearby Arley, delivers this message against intemperance:

"As St George in armed array

Doth the fiery dragon slay

So mayst thou with might no less

Slay that dragon drunkenness."

Other examples of his verse can be seen in the pub, in the village pump house and on the rhyming signposts of Arley.

In the two downstairs bar areas the Lounge Bar and Stocks Bar hot and cold snacks and meals are served every lunchtime and evening, with filled rolls for quick bites and main courses running from traditional jumbo cod in batter with chips and mushy peas to cheeseburgers, steaks, chicken with barbecue sauce and the day's curry (always a great favorite here).

The pub has featured more than 500 guest beers from all over Britain in the last five years, and there's always an excellent selection to enjoy.
