CHESTER

Chester is the best preserved walled city in England as its medieval walls form the most complete circuit around any town or city in England. … Chester was founded as Roman fort in the year 79 and was known as Deva. It was one of the three major Roman army bases in the UK

The City of Chester not only offers retail therapy, but also culture, fine restaurants, and places of historical interest.

Chester has its origins steeped in Roman history and its surrounding city walls were originally constructed by the Romans and are around two thousand years old.  The walls offer a gentle circular walk around the city, of nearly two miles, taking in many interesting sites along the way such as the Roman amphitheatre and gardens, the Victorian Eastgate Clock, and Chester Castle.

The stunning architecture of the City’s cathedral which has features from Romanesque and Gothic styles is well worth a visit, as is the Cathedral at Height tour.  This tour involves climbing 125 feet to the top of the tower to take in some spectacular views of the city whilst the tour guide relays some interesting facts and tales about the Cathedral’s history.

One of the best ways to see Chester, and take in all the interesting sites, is to take a guided tour on foot. Or, if you prefer a more leisurely trip, take a sightseeing cruise along the River Dee to take in such sites as the Iron Bridge and the Eaton Estate – home of the Duke and Duchess of Westminster.

Exclusive to Chester is ‘The Rows’ which are a wonderfully eclectic selection of shops, restaurants, and cafes to suit all tastes and pockets. And, for those who enjoy a flutter on the horses and getting dressed up in their best bib and tucker, Chester has horse racing meetings between May and September.

Chester Zoo is only three miles away from Chester city centre and can be reached by taxi or bus. With its rare and exotic animals, beautiful gardens, play areas and a plentiful choice of places to eat, it is a superb day out for all the family.
